I would love your opinion. We went "cell phone only" over a year ago, and it really stresses me out because the whole family is not trained yet to keep cell phones available, charged, and volume turned up. I want to add a landline back BUT don't want to add trouble by getting other people's old phone numbers/calls. The phone company wants $50 to give me back my old phone number. (Rotten money grubbers ... really?? You'd think they'd be happy to ADD service instead of having it canceled.)
Worth it or not? I know it's a personal choice but am conflicted. My husband is totally against it but of course he's someone I can't always reach when I'm at work and he's home, out of reach due to above .....!

Well, I typically go with what hubby says, but that's me. Do you really think you'd get lots of unwanted calls. If so, get a telezapper. You plug it into your phone and it emits a sound upon answering the phone that is like the sound you hear when a phone number is disconnected. The person will hang up generally and you'll most likely not hear from that caller again. It might take a few months for all the callers to that old number to get the message. Then again, $50 isn't that bad to keep your old number.
We keep a landline because with my hearing I don't always hear the cell or it is in my purse. I say pay the $50 for peace of mind.
We still have our landline, but only because we have to keep it - the only Internet service we can currently get is through Century Link (slowwwwww!!!!!). But we long ago unplugged the actual phone because the only calls we got on that number were from solicitors. We all have cell phones and amazingly, everyone pretty much always has theirs tethered to them!
We haven't had a landline for 5 years everyone is pretty good with the cell phones. My husband would like a landline cause he can't always get a hold of me but that cause I'm in the middle of something and I wouldn't be answering a landline any better.

If you, or a visitor to your home, had to call 911 right now, could they? On who's cell phone? And would the visitor know your address? 911 operators obtain your address from your landline and it saves valuable time. Landline = cheap insurance.
I have always had a landline. I think it is important to have also an answering machine hooked up to it.
I fought the idea of a cell phone for several reasons. I find them dangerous when using in the car. People forget they are in public when using them and I don't need to hear all of their business...etc...
We went "cell phone only" just a few months ago and so far it's working pretty well for us. I was the one who did not want to give up my landline, but I have to say that I do not miss the unwanted sales calls at all! (but I'm also the worst offender of not hearing my cell phone, keeping it charged, etc...)
Wishing you and yours a wonderful 2012!
