Today's Epiphany - My Word of the Year

* Epiphany (holiday), a Christian holiday on January 6 celebrating the visit of the Magi to the infant Jesus

* Epiphany (feeling), the sudden realization or comprehension of the essence or meaning of something

Today is my day. The 12th Day of Christmas is here, our special Christian day in recognition of the wise men visiting Jesus. (I guess I need to take down my Christmas decorations now, huh?)

Today is also when I finally realized my Word for 2010: FAITH.

This past weekend, I had spoke with my nursery workers in our huddle about the new year, how my friend Kathy has started going through the devotional Streams in the Desert again, that I was, too, and encouraging them to do the same.

I then shared how a friend of mine had posted a Word for the year on her blog and that I wanted to do the same. I encouraged the volunteers to think of a word that they might focus on for 2010 ... that my friend chose Gratitude, another blogger had chosen Prosper. Now, the 11AM group is quiet during huddle normally so I just thought they'd tuck this thought into their hats. But no, they started popping up with words all around the room .... "Solitude" for Sunday's message, "Peace", "Hope" ... there were more that I wish I could remember. I was so touched.

THEN, during service while walking babies, one of my male volunteers told me his word just out of the blue ... "Pearl" ... like giving up lots of things that are good for the pearl of great price. He teared up when he said Pearl, and then so did I. He shared his true heart for orphans and his desire to go to Nicaragua after he retires, asking for prayer for that possibility.

As I continued to search for my Word, I've found several helps online. Maybe you or someone you know is interested in choosing your own Word for 2010? Here's a partial list shared several years ago of possible "Words" for the year, for contemplation and prayer:

Compassion
Delight
Generosity
Effortlessness
Wealth
Gratitude
Abundance
Creativity
Willingness
Change
Growth
Freedom
Mastery
Kindness
Health
Presence
Acceptance
Courage
Confidence
Self-Love
Action
Forgiveness
Forgive
Release
Trust
Knowing
Patience

In searching out others bloggers' Words of the Year, I find where one group may have started. And, found a website where the owner is giving away a piece of jewelry embossed with the winner's Word --- cute! I decided need to decide quick because I want to enter and the deadline is the 11th, my darling daughter's 11th birthday!

Then, what really convinced me there's power in this One Word idea was a great journaling/worksheet packet to assist in finding your own Word:

Tonight, I decided on my Word - FAITH. It's now hanging on the wall behind my monitors at work, where I spend most of my waking hours during the week. I love it!

Faith - in God
Faith
- that God will see me through any hard times that come up in 2010
Faith - that I will faithfully follow my new fitness routine
Faith - that I will be faithful to my commitments of time and money

faith

[feyth]
1. confidence or trust in a person or thing: faith in another's ability.
2. belief that is not based on proof: He had faith that the hypothesis would be substantiated by fact.
3. belief in God or in the doctrines or teachings of religion: the firm faith of the Pilgrims.
4. belief in anything, as a code of ethics, standards of merit, etc.: to be of the same faith with someone concerning honesty.
5. a system of religious belief: the Christian faith; the Jewish faith.
6. the obligation of loyalty or fidelity to a person, promise, engagement, etc.: Failure to appear would be breaking faith.
7. the observance of this obligation; fidelity to one's promise, oath, allegiance, etc.: He was the only one who proved his faith during our recent troubles.
8. Christian Theology. the trust in God and in His promises as made through Christ and the Scriptures by which humans are justified or saved.
9. in faith, in truth; indeed: In faith, he is a fine lad.

I like this idea.

Balance. I think my word will be Balance for 2010. Meaning level, even, constant. So unlike our 2009, I will strive for Balance in 2010.

I believe my word for this year aside from all my silly words will be HOPE. Hope for a better world in 2010, a better economy, hope for more compassion in our world.
