BEGUILED: A Novel
By Deeanne Gist and J. Mark Bertrand
I was given the opportunity to review my first Christian romantic suspense novel. This is a first time partnership from bestselling historical romance author Deeanne Gist and debut crime fiction writer J. Mark Bertrand. Beguiled was so enjoyable, I cannot wait to read Mark's solo release, Back on Murder, which is out this summer. I was drawn to this book because I enjoy a good mystery and who doesn't want to read romance? This combination did not fail to deliver.
The story centers around dog-walker-to-the-rich Rylee Monroe and reporter Logan Woods. A series of burglaries in Charleston -- most of whose victims are Rylee's clients -- suddenly puts Rylee right in the middle of an investigation as a suspect. Logan has high ambitions to write his first crime novel and these burglaries are a major part of his writings. Now, he just needs to find out whodunit. The more he gets to know Rylee, the more he's drawn to her, and they both seek out the truth together.
There are several plot twists that keep the story from being too predictable. While not overtly preachy, I enjoyed the depth of Rylee's character in this Christian novel and appreciate how Logan's family of origin is grounded in a strong faith. I suggest you don't pick this book up unless you have enough time to finish; it's a page turner!
Shawnee's Rating: 4 out of a possible 5
