Secret Santa Swap 2012 Questionnaire

I've signed up for my Secret Santa Swap and am posting this for my secret partner.  If this sounds like fun, head on over to my swap blog and register before November 3!

What are your hobbies? I have too many hobbies - sewing, crocheting, reading, hanging out on Pinterest
What are your favorite colors? I love bright colors. Christmas decorating is mostly red and white; I've been really drawn to yellow and grey together, too.
Do you collect anything? I collect all sorts of lovelies: Russian nesting dolls, cookbooks, Mary Engelbreit goodies, purses, stray animals (but don't send me another cat, 'k?). Oh yeah, and aprons. I REALLY collect aprons.
Are you allergic to any fibers or animals? I'm allergic to cat dander but, since I have two cats myself, anything you might send with a few stray cat hairs won't do much damage.
Do you have any pets? Why yes, a huge Mastidane (great dane/mastiff mix) named Apollo and two cats that used to belong to our grown daughters, orange tabbies named Oliver and Chong.
Coffee, Tea, or Chocolate? Not a real fan of coffee although I've been ordering Soy White Chocolate Mochas in an attempt to fit it when vising coffee shops; flavored teas are good, but hot chocolate is my fav. I saw that someone found a Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate mix last year and that sounds YUMMY!!
What do you like to read? Ummm, everything! I love a good novel (but PG - no "Shades of Grey" here), especially culinary mysteries like (Dianne Mott Davidson, etc), crafting magazines, anything my DD is reading (so I read a lot of YA).
Do you prefer Cookies or Candies as a sweet? Homemade cookies are my weakness, especially anything chocolate or caramel. Wedding cookies, too. mmmmm
What is your favorite holiday treat? Starbucks Cranberry Bliss Bars (I have the recipe), Chocolate Orange Sticks.
Describe your favorite holiday tradition. Driving around to see the lights, watching "It's a Wonderful Life' for the millionth time, decorating several trees for Christmas, sending a shoebox full of gifts through Operation Christmas Child via Samaritans Purse.
Did you believe in Santa as a child? No. Sad story actually .. my parents grew up in the depression and adopted me (and then a brother for me) later in life. They didn't want me to believe in the lie that hurt them so much when they were younger; Santa didn't visit their households and they were always so sad at Christmas, thinking that they had done something wrong or he didn't love them. So I never was allowed to believe in Santa. But, I didn't make the same mistake with my kiddos. Santa is the mystery of Christmas and encourages giving to others with no thought of something in return. It's also why MUST remember to give to others less fortunate, because every child deserves a Merry Christmas, even if their parents cannot provide one. (steps off soapbox)
When do you open presents? We open the majority of our presents Christmas Eve after church, then Santa gifts and stockings in the AM.
Do you put up a tree and when? If not, how do you celebrate? We usually put up trees in the first weekend of December. Last year, we had four I think .... the kitchen tree is all red ornaments, the entry tree has unbreakables and jingle bells (the dog's tail is a dangerous thing when guests arrive), there's a small white tree in the bathroom, and then the family tree is a HUGE 10-foot rotating tree that is stuffed full of ornaments collected over the years. *sigh* I love Christmas, and my husband is a dear to indulge me. Oh, and they are all artificial because Mike is allergic!
Does your tree have a theme? (see above)
What has been your favorite gift to give? to receive? Oh, I stink at choosing a "favorite" (why did I write this question?).  I do love presents that are homemade or a surprise because of the thought that goes into them.

  20. When do you start your Christmas? I think about it all year, buying little things (and sometimes forgetting where I hid them). Fall Felted Bag Exchange Questionnaire

  1. How long have you been knitting or crocheting? How did you learn? or from whom? How long have you been knitting? Still can't knit well but I've been crocheting about 30+ years. My mom taught me one summer when I was bored as a child.
  2. What was your first felted object, and why did you decide to try felting? I made a shoulder bag with a thread pattern that I made out of wool and novelty yarn. The art of Felting came about while I was on a hiatus from crocheting and I LOVE to try new things.

  4. What are your favorite styles\types of bags? (Long straps? Short handles? Handbags? Totes? Embellished? Plain? Include links to patterns or photos if you’d like – give your pal an idea of what you enjoy!) I adore large bags that are functional and embellished - especially Nicky Epstein's bags from Fabulous Felted Bags like the Wisteria, Jacobian Floral, Simply Shetland Fuschias and Terry Ross' May Flowers (pix from ITE4), and Noni Bags like the Cherry Blossom and Bobbles everywhere.

SP11 Questionnaire

This is my first SP swap, so I am VERY excited. Here's more than you would ever want to know about lil' ol' me:

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?
Bamboo is wonderful to work with. There is a yarn that I really want, Karaoke #306 by Southwest Trading ... I need two or three skeins for a new felted bag and haven't found a supplier yet. I have a closet full of acrylics and novelty yarns that I don't care to use. I've found that if I'm to invest my time and energy into a project, I want it to be quality. However, acrylic does have its place with kids washable things....

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?
Lots of places .. but I never have enough! I have some fun holders from other swaps including homemade hook roll, incense and candy tubes.

3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?
I've learned to knit three or four times, but still haven't finished one project. I get frustrated because I'm so slow so go back to crochet. There's still hope for me yet.

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?
Yep ... http://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/ref=yourlists_pop_1/002-8203343-0672834

5. What's your favorite scent?
I don't wear perfume, but love lightly scented candles like peach and melon. My favorite lotion is Hempz, which actually smells wonderful and absorbs quickly.

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?
Big time sweet tooth ... I love chocolate with caramel and nuts best.

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?
I sew and am learning to bead a smidge; I also want to try kool-aid dying wool. No spinning though.

8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)
I love Christian pop and gospel, country, jazz, classical, Josh Groban, classic rock ... most everything except hip-hop and funk.

9. What's your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can't stand?
I like bright colors, most every one in the rainbow. Earth-tones aren't my first choice.

10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?
Married for 22 years, four kids (25, 21, 19 and 8) plus an American Eskimo dog, a tabby kitty and a beta fish!

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?
I like soft scarves and would love some homemade mittens!

12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?
I am in love with crocheting felted bags right now!

13. What are you knitting right now?
I am in the middle of a Spiderman Round Ripple Afghan for my daughter's college roommate, in addition to about 20 WIPs.

14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts?
I absolutely ADORE handmade gifts. I so appreciate the time and energy it takes.

15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?
I love working with wood hooks, especially hand carved.

16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?
Yes to both, but I haven't figured them out either! I just haven't taken the time with a recent move, etc.

17. How old is your oldest UFO?
About 2 1/2 years, when I took up the craft again. It's a gorgeous snowflake afghan, but I'm disappointed because I left the ends too short to weave in (which my mother didn't teach me). I have to finish assembly the hexagon and I hate that part!

18. What is your favorite holiday?
Christmas is probably my all time favorite holiday, since the whole world seems to come to a halt for a little bit of magic, whether or not you are religious.

19. Is there anything that you collect?
I love Mary Engelbreit collectibles, David Winter cottages, and pocket dragons; I'm also just starting to collect tea cups and saucers and WOULD love one from you!

20. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?
I don't have any subscriptions right now since my Crochet! just expired. I'd love a subscription to the new Interweave Crochet magazine. I have my eye on several Gourmet Crochet patterns like I'd love (Chocolate Sweets and Treats, Cupcake Tree, Amigurumi in the Garden, Natalie Collection felted purses), plus 12 Bags Fulled and Nicky Epstein's Knitted Flowers that I want to recreate in crochet.

21. Are there any new techniques you'd like to learn?
I'm intrigued with lace knitting and crocheting, entrelac and tapestry crochet.

22. Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements?
I don't know how to use DPN ... I belong to crochet socks group and have yet to make one pair. I'll post my foot measurements as soon as I know what parts to measure!

23. When is your birthday?
May 30, 1965

24. Are you on Ravelry? If so, what's your ID?
Hah ... I'm #18671 and there are 9827 people ahead of me. Talk to me next summer!

Knit 1 Tea 2 Color Swap Questionnaire

Knit 1 Tea 2 Color Swap Questionnaire

  • Do you like loose tea or bags, or both – something you want to try? I've never had loose tea, so would especially love that along with tips from an expert.
  • What is your favorite kind of tea (Brand, flavor, variety, etc)? I'm new to tea, so nothing too strong flavored. I've recently been introduced to Chai Tea made with Soy at Starbucks. Yum.
  • Favorite color in regards to tea or one you would like to try? (black, green, red, and white) (keeping in mind that this is how this swap is set up). Well, I've never had red and it's one of my favorite colors so .....
  • Would you say you were a tea pot kind of person or just a hot water heater kind? I WANT to be a teapot person ... right now, I'm a lowly microwaver of water.
  • What tea accessories would you like but have never purchases for yourself? Truth to be told, I don't own much other than two decorative tea cups and saucers, and a beautiful tea tray. I can use it all! =)
  • How do you prefer to be pampered? (examples: mani/pedi, bubble bath, yummy treat, etc). If I'm pampering myself, I like to kick back, soft music, candles and spend some time reading.
  • If you were a kind of yarn what would you be and why? A multi-textured handspun ... a reflection of all the tugs and twists in my life turned into something beautiful.
  • If you had to knit/crochet baby booties, a fun fur scarf, or a fair isle sweater, which would you choose and why? The crocheted baby booties since it's a fast-results project that is useful yet I can be very creative with the pattern and yarn choices.
  • What other event would make you skip a tea party? (A garden party? A book club meeting? A yoga class? Opening night for a new action thriller? etc?) If I agreed to attend, I would only skip the party for a family emergency that no one else could handle.
  • What treat would you consider essential at your tea party? (Sweet? Salty? Scones? Those petite pastry trays with a couple of all sorts of things? Little crust less sandwiches?) I have a horrible sweet tooth, so petite fours or mini-cupcakes are more my style.
  • When buying yarn for a project how do you choose - do you buy the one called for or do you substitute? I've done both, but prefer to use the yarn a pattern was designed for if at all possible.
  • What do you carry your knitting/crocheting in when on the go? Adorable bags I've received from swaps!
  • Favorite movie to watch while knitting/crocheting? I love chick flicks that I can cry with ..
  • Are you a traditional tea cup kind of person or a mug type of person? Do you care if they match? I want to be a matching tea cup/saucer girlie-girl
  • Favorite childhood birthday party? We didn't really have parties, even though my parents spoiled me rotten with gifts.
  • Favorite type of scone and jam? Cranberry-orange scones, with any seedless jam.
  • If you use candles, what is your favorite scent? Peach or vanilla .. NOT flowery.
  • If you could choose 3 people to have 'tea' with, who would they be and why? (famous or not, living or dead). Mary Engelbreit, Nicky Epstein and YOU (my new friend)
  • You've been invited to a tea party, what 'props' will you wear (formal or casual)? I would LOVE to dress to the nines with lace gloves, a hat or perhaps a lacy handmade shawl.
  • Any allergies/preferences you have or are willing to admit to? Milk over dark chocolate, soy over cream, country over contemporary.
  • Anything we missed that you want your pal to know? I'm very excited to participate, and will learn as much as I can so I can also be a good swapper for my partner in return. In the yarn category, I'd love some SWTC Karaoke #306 for a new felted bag (haven't found any locally), or some Cherry Tree Hill merino. Thanks for reading!

Spring Felted Bag - Contest #2 Question #3

Where's your favorite place to knit or crochet? Describe (or show!) us where you sit and how you most enjoy your craft!

Lately, I have been crocheting in bed while my husband watches a tv show or dvd, or while sitting on the couch with the family. I have even crocheted in the movie theater (which was before getting a lighted crochet hook) ... luckily it was for a felted bag because I somehow got turned around and crocheted inside-out for a few rows! Good thing all that hot water hides mistakes! LOL!!!
Confession -- this is just similar to my bed, not the actual one ... we have a king size wrought iron with white down comforter but then the same patterns for pillows, etc.... sorry Deb! Didn't mean to mislead you!!
