International Tote Exchange IV

I'm very excited -- happymomma just sent me my ITE4 partner info! My partner has left a lot of room for my choices in her bag selection. Little does she know I'm CRAZY!!! The bigger and more unique bag, the better --- I even was thinking about making the Bjork Swan bag at one time! M-a-y-b-e I'll ask a few questions, or m-a-y-b-e I'll give into the insanity .... LOL!!!

Spring Felted Bag - Contest #2 Question #4

Checking this off my to-do-list, our final SFBE challenge is to blog about three people in the exchange with whom we have something in common (other than fiber arts). I had lots of fun looking, and found several:

Deb in Massachusetts and Judy in Cleveland: We all have three daughters!

Tiffany in Oregon: We're both in Oregon, although she got to go to the Shop Hop that I had to drop out of last month!

Channon in Virginia: It would appear from one of her recent posts that we both break into song spontaneously! And, are patriotic -- great commentary on Memorial Day. I need to add a roll call, too.

New House

We are smack dab in the middle of a move to a different home ... This house, as humble as it is, has been a huge answer to prayer. We are moving to a 1893 vintage farm house on two acres in Wilsonville, just five miles from where we now live.

I have been praying for a house just like this, that:
  • is affordable ... we have free well water/septic system, plus we're able to store items in the barn so can close our expensive storage unit;
  • allows both my (deceased) Dad's dog (Ringo) and Tess's cat (Marvin) -- we were looking at needing to put down our 16-yo American Eskimo and won't need to;
  • is bigger than the postage-stamp-sized ones I've been seeing -- even though the kitchen is smaller than we like, there is 2,000+ sq ft in the farm house;
  • feels safe since Mike works odd shifts -- it is on 2+ acres, we're able to see for great distance and we share a driveway with another couple who will notice comings and goings;
  • is close enough that we stay at Rolling Hills -- we're just a few miles on the other side of church, and have easy access to I205 so my workday commute will be approx. the same;
  • and they accepted our application -- the agencies are cutthroat, plus require $3k - $4k to get into rentals.

    Plus, Tatum absolutely loves this tire swing behind the house, and all the farm animals on neighboring properties. No horses, though -- darn.

    There are a few negatives that we are working around:
  • in addition to the small kitchen, all the doorways are only 31" or less so we'll have some fun trying to get our big furniture and appliances into the farm house - AND the kitchen has pink striped wallpaper;
  • only one bathroom, albiet large .. 'nuff said;
  • Mike (with his weak ankles) will have to navigate stairs since the master bedroom and little T's room are both upstairs, plus Ringo cannot get up the stairs so will have to be content guarding the stairwell;

  • it desperately needs painted and cleaned, and we don't have time before moving in --- the girls and I were out there scrubbing trim and walls today but have quite a bit left to do. Ugg ... feel free to come help anytime this holiday weekend. =) BUT, it is so much nicer than 90% of the homes I looked at before getting this one! Course, this also means a new school for Tates (bye-bye Byrom, Hello Boeckman), a new phone number (ugh) and a new ISP --- we might have only dial-up available!! [gasp]

  • One of the most special things about the farm is something I found on Mother's Day. A little background: Mike was unemployed for almost two years and we ended up selling our first home that we had purchased after my mother died in 1997, with funds from my parents so that my dad could live with us. We took care of him for several years until his health required living in the VA nursing home about 90 minutes away. We visited him every other weekend for two years, and he passed away six years ago tomorrow. So, selling our old house and moving into a rental felt like I was losing a last link with my parents, but I was so grateful that we had the opportunity to raise our children in that home. So, on this past Sunday - Mother's Day - I was showing our newest house to Mike's mom and found this buried near the front porch:
    It felt like a sign from my mom -- she had a HUGE collection of frogs -- and it seemed like she was saying, "We're right here, honey .. it's gonna be all right."

    So I really am excited to move, donate to Goodwill a ton of stuff that we don't need, and then slowly decorate our new home for a fresh start. I'd love for at least some of the house to look like the kitchen below, at vintage rose collection dot com. At least we already have pink walls!
    No, not MY kitchen but I want one just like it!

    Spring Felted Bag - Contest #2 Question #3

    Where's your favorite place to knit or crochet? Describe (or show!) us where you sit and how you most enjoy your craft!

    Lately, I have been crocheting in bed while my husband watches a tv show or dvd, or while sitting on the couch with the family. I have even crocheted in the movie theater (which was before getting a lighted crochet hook) ... luckily it was for a felted bag because I somehow got turned around and crocheted inside-out for a few rows! Good thing all that hot water hides mistakes! LOL!!!
    Confession -- this is just similar to my bed, not the actual one ... we have a king size wrought iron with white down comforter but then the same patterns for pillows, etc.... sorry Deb! Didn't mean to mislead you!!

    Tagged!

    Drats, that Mary , Debb & Kena tagged me! Here's how it works: Each person tagged gives 7 random facts about themselves, as well as the rules of the game. You need to tag seven others and list their names on your blog. You have to leave those you plan on tagging a note in their comments so they know that they have been tagged and to read your blog. So here goes! In turn, I have to tag 7 people to do the same. Here are the people I tag... sorry gals :)

    Ginny, Vashti, Misty, Cupcake, Priscilla, Nicola, Tinks

    1. When I sneeze, it's always in sets of three.
    2. Our new kitchen has pink striped wall paper .. how does this go with Mary Engelbreit primary colors and cherries???
    3. I really miss owning the home where all my kids have lived.
    4. I wanted to be an architect as a child.
    5. I run a business helping people prepare freezer meals but I don't really "love" to cook, I just like being efficient.
    6. Everytime I answer a questionnaire, I have new "favorites" (I hate choosing).
    7. I'm really shy and insecure inside, although I love chatting with new people and making friends.

    Now you know all my secrets!

    Spring Felted Bag - Contest #2, Question #2

    Where you live, what signifies the beginning of Spring? A favorite flower blooming? Snowmelt? Pollen (Cough cough, gak, here in ATL, thanks) Post something up describing how you knew 'Spring had Sprung' for you!

    I absolutely LIVE for seeing the pink blossoms of dogwoods and cherry trees. I don't know tree well enough to name them, but we have a row of these amazing trees leading up the driveway where I work. Every spring, there is an endless row of beautiful pink flowers. Unfortunately, we also typically have lots of wind and rain in springtime, so the blossoms rarely last longer than a week or two. Heavenly. (This is a picture of what the trees look like that I found on the 'net, not a picture of my own.)

    Spring Felted Bag - Contest #2, Question #1

    How did you get interested in felting? Did you learn it from someone, see a bag you liked? Just want to try something new? If you have a picture of your first project, please include it!

    When I took up crocheting again about a year and a half ago, I had never even used a yarn other than acrylics. I've come a long way, baby!! In surfing the internet, I kept hearing about felting and fulling, and saw some amazing pictures. So, I got brave and decided to try my hand felting. Of course, I totally messed it up since I didn't use a real pattern but modified one for a bag intended to be made in thread by using a larger hook and wool, mixing in some fun fur. Here's the silly picture! The lip of the bag is all wavy, but it's mine. I've bought and created terrific patterns since then, and really enjoy the excitement of throwing a perfectly good article into the washing machine and the surprise on what turns out!

    No Sheep Swap

    Fun new swap I've joined. I should have posted sooner because registrations are closed, but still check it out at Interweave Press. It's in conjunction with a new book, but I joined just because I'm excited to see some new yarns. I'm hopeful for some linen or hemp! And the fact they only mention knitters by name doesn't offend me ... much. LOL!!

    Knitty.com editor Amy R. Singer’s No Sheep For You: Knit Happy with Cotton, Silk, Linen, Hemp, Bamboo, and Other Delights will be published this March 2007 and we’re celebrating in style with two virtual events for knitters across the globe! If you've felt left out of the party wool-loving knitters have been having for years, Amy’s book will educate you and these events will connect you with other knitters looking to exchange ideas, pictures and inspiration for their nonwool creations.

    Thank You, Jayne!

    I LOVE my April BABE package!! Look at the wonderful goodies Jayne gave me! Jayne, you really did your homework because everything is PERFECT! Yankee Candle in Clean Cotton scent(I only like light scents), another candle with red (my favorite color) ribbon, a trinket box with adorable kittens on it(!), Angel clip for my visor (how did you know I drive fast??), and CHERRY goodies!!! I adore cherries -- the cute vase that I think I'm going to use to display my wooden crochet hooks, cherry nameplates (which I might laminate to use in my business), and cute cherry notepad. And the books -- one from a Christian author I just added to my Amazon list and has recipes in it like another author I love, Diane Mott Davidson --- my cherry BOOKMARK is already 3/4 of the way through it and I just got this last night. PLUS a book that has an author named "Shawn" is another one from a Christian publishing house. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!! WOW!! What a generous swap partner you are Jayne -- thanks again. Hugs-Shawnee
